My name is Avery Hamel, and I am a student at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas, set to graduate in May 2025. I am also minoring in Spanish and completed an undergraduate certificate in Data Science. Just a few years ago, I never would have guessed that I would be a student at KU, but fate led me to this school, and I am so glad that I now get to experience the multitude of opportunities that KU’s journalism program provides to its students.

I was the runner-up for the Colorado Student Media Association’s “Journalist of the Year” Dorothy Greer Scholarship my senior year of high school, from which I won $1,500 courtesy of my state’s Journalism Education Association.

I have written for multiple websitres since starting my endeavors in journalism in March 2019, including the Lawrence Journal-World as the KU women’s basketball beat writer and overall KU sports coverage for the University Daily Kansan.

I’ve freelanced for Over the Monster, a Boston Red Sox website within the SB Nation family, since 2021. I also worked at Baseball Prospectus as a weekly contributor to the “Box Score Banter” series in 2023. I am very proud of my work with BP and the opportunity that the editors gave me to advance my analytics writing career.

Since starting as a student at the University of Kansas in August 2022, I worked for two years as a student employee with the Project on the History of Black Writing as a communications assistant before joining the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as a graphic designer and communications assistant for my final year.

I am proficient in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, InDesign, Illustrator, AfterEffects, R Studio, Python, SQL, Canva, and Adobe Express/Spark.

My ultimate goal as a journalist is to take sports analytics data and pair it with my communication abilities to better convey the importance of data in sports to a general audience of fans, front-office officials and peers.
